Amsterdam District and Curriculum
The Greater Amsterdam School District is committed to providing a quality educational experience for all the students in the district. In order to improve educational opportunities the district is looking to build relationships with area businesses and colleges, to put an emphasis on literacy across different areas of content and provide additional high level coursework such as Accelerated Science, and an Accelerated Regents Biology course.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Amsterdam District Curriculum
Curriculum in the schools in the Greater Amsterdam School District includes academic classes in Science, Social Studies, Arts, Mathematics, Computer Science, Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Music and Physical Education. The district adheres to the curriculum set down by the New York State Board of Regents called the Common Core Curriculum. From pre-Kindergarten through high school, the Common Core Curriculum provides a focused and sequential academic experience with an emphasis on providing students with the skills to be literate in both Language Arts, Mathematics, and the Sciences.
The essentials of the Language Arts program is to learn to read, write, listen and speak and be able to demonstrate a control of the English language. In Mathematics, students begin learning computational skills, basic geometry and algebra in elementary school and move on to more advanced levels of geometry and algebra in high school. At the higher grades students also study statistics and probability.

Keeping Informed: Recent Amsterdam Educational News
- Radio Disney Get Active - More than 485 students from the William B. Tecler Arts in Education Magnet School participated in the Radio Disney, Get Fit Challenge. The school came in second in New York State out of the fifteen schools with high participation. The program is aimed at helping kids and their families to get fit by participating in fitness activities for at least 20 minutes per day during the 55 day challenge. The school won fitness equipment and a party which will be hosted by Radio Disney.
- Girls Inc. Forum - Time Warner Cable recently sponsored an all day Girls Inc. Forum which was held at the Hudson Valley Community College TEC SMART campus. The event was attended by fifty 7th graders from Amsterdam. The event was aimed at providing information to girls about available careers in the area of science, technology, mathematics and engineering.
- LEGO League Challenge - A First LEGO League (FLL) Challenge was recently held at the Lagrange Middle School in Lagrangeville, New York. The event was attended by area students including members of the Lynch Lions Roboticians team from Lynch Literacy Academy. The club was able to take second place in the event. The teams were challenged to come up with a robotic answer to making life easier for senior citizens.

You can also find photo galleries and facts about our current president and his cabinet. You can take a tour of the White House and see decorations and art that reside in the President’s residence. There is also information on the First Ladies and their legacies.
