Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Anacortes District Curriculum
The middle school curriculum continues to utilize and develop the skills learned in elementary school. Students learn how to write for clarity and effectiveness. Reading curriculum at the middle school level consists of developing resources for reading different types of literary material and information text that will prepare them for high school. Students are placed in either general math, Algebra 1 or Geometry based on their elementary math test scores. The science skills students gained using the elementary curriculum are applied to Earth, Life, and Physical Science in middle school.
In high school, students take classes in freshman and sophomore composition that enhances their reading and writing skills, and then apply these skills in upper division English Language Arts electives as juniors and seniors. The focus in the freshman and sophomore classes is writing effectively and literary analysis. In Math, students complete the Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 sequence and are able to take a number of upper division electives once the series is complete. Students build on the knowledge learned in the middle school science curriculum by taking Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in high school.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Avoiding Senioritis
Senioritis—its reputation precedes it. The last academic stretch of a 13-year career can be agonizing. Costly mistakes regarding college applications or important tests can make you regret your angst. There are many ways to make sure that jitters, anxieties, and laziness don’t get in the way of tying your academic career up with a pretty bow. First, follow through on your college applications. It may be necessary to ensure institutions received your application(s). Make sure to thank all the people who helped you along the way. Sending thank-you cards to teachers, coaches, and counselors helps build character and lets people know you appreciate them.
