Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ankeny District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, students will continue to build on what they have already learned in previous years as the materials they use become more complex. Instead of being viewed separately, teachers view and teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing as interrelated skills that support each other. LEAD 21 is the literacy curriculum used in kindergarten through fifth grade and the writing curriculum is Being a Writer. Acceleration and intervention are also integral parts of instructional strategies to assure student success.

In Math, teachers are trained in the Everyday Mathematics curriculum which focuses on practical application and understanding of math concepts. As part of their acceleration plan, students have the option to test out of a course. Students in need of intervention receive differentiated instruction as well as intervention labs to assist them in performing at grade level. In high school, students are expected to pass through the series of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

Chalk Talk: How to Create a Successful Study Place

The most important thing about creating a study place is to know how you study best. Do you study better when there is classical music playing in the background or when it is completely silent? Does the repetition of flash cards help you memorize facts or is it easier for you to type things out over and over again? The most successful study place not only helps you focus, but will also provide the necessary tools. A small desk with plenty of pencils, paper, flash cards, highlighters and post-its are all great tools to have handy. Some students may do better with a small cubicle in a library while others may prefer to have all their things spread out on their bed. Knowing how you study best will help you figure out where to study and what you will need.
