Chalk Talk: Why Studying History Is Important

Although some students may not initially understand why studying history is integral to their education, upon closer examination the reasons become plainly evident. Rather than being something that happened only in the past, history is a dynamic process by which the events of today are influenced by events of the past. In this regard, history is a state of being, rather than something that happened to someone else long ago. History also gives provides a context within which students are able to better understand how things came to be. Gaining that perspective gives students an improved ability to understand the modern world and their place in it. Additionally, history offers the ability to evaluate the actions of those that came before us so we can make better decisions today. This discernment leads learners to be better than those who came before them. Likewise, this drive to improve upon the work of our forefathers is the force people need to create a better world not just for the present, but also for the future.
