Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Arnold District Curriculum

The science curriculum in Arnold is based on the Next Generation Science Standards. As part of that curriculum, high school students take part in an in-depth study of chemistry. Students learn about atoms, including their structure and how that structure influences the properties of elements and the bonds they form. Learners gain an understanding of the Periodic Table, including where elements fall on the table and what their location on the table means in terms of mass and atomic number.

The social studies curriculum in Arnold includes a government course for high school students that facilitates the understanding of the structure and function of our government. Students analyze foundational documents, such as the Articles of Confederation, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution, which helped shape the federal system in the United States. Learners study the concepts of states’ rights, popular sovereignty, checks and balances, and majority rule, as well as other seminal concepts in the development of our system of government.

Chalk Talk: Value of Hands-On Learning

Students that take part in lessons that require hands-on learning gain a number of benefits. First, hands-on learning helps students retain information better. In fact, research shows that students involved in this kind of learning retain 3 ½ times as much information as a student that listens to a lecture. Second, because hands-on activities require constant activity, students are engaged longer in the material. Having an active role in their learning helps children to develop a sense of empowerment with regard to their education as well. Lastly, hands-on learning promotes the development of critical thinking skills. Instead of relying on memory and attention, students develop problem solving skills and analytical skills that allow them to make split-second decisions.
