Chalk Talk: Value of Hands-On Learning

Students that take part in lessons that require hands-on learning gain a number of benefits. First, hands-on learning helps students retain information better. In fact, research shows that students involved in this kind of learning retain 3 ½ times as much information as a student that listens to a lecture. Second, because hands-on activities require constant activity, students are engaged longer in the material. Having an active role in their learning helps children to develop a sense of empowerment with regard to their education as well. Lastly, hands-on learning promotes the development of critical thinking skills. Instead of relying on memory and attention, students develop problem solving skills and analytical skills that allow them to make split-second decisions.
