Keeping Informed: Recent Ashland Educational News
- Students Perform Forest Work - Students from Lake Superior Elementary School recently worked on tapping maple trees on the school’s property. Students will use the sap to make syrup. This is a great lesson that helps students understand the entire cycle of food products and can lead to more sustainable practices.
- Division 3 Soccer Champs - Ashland’s high school boys’ soccer team was the Division 3 state champion this year. The student-athletes on the team were honored recently with a banner raising ceremony. This also helped the athletes to focus on their academics to understand how much achievement in both areas means for their success.
- text4hope Available to Students - In an effort to provide young people in Ashland with a lifeline in times of crisis, the Ashland and Bayfield County Crisis Line offers the text4hope service. The service is available from 3:30-9:00 pm. This is also a program that members of the community are welcome to volunteer for and help out those in need.

Chalk Talk: How Flipped Classrooms Work
A flipped classroom is one in which students are responsible for beginning their learning of a topic on their own. Teachers might assign a reading or have students listen to a podcast about an upcoming topic before learning on that topic takes place in the classroom. Putting the onus of responsibility for familiarizing themselves with the material before class means students are much more active in the learning process. Students are able to conduct investigations into aspects of a topic in which they are most interested. Because student interest is increased, retention of the information is improved as well. And because flipped classrooms usually involve a lot of technology, students gain valuable experience in using technology to pursue educational goals. As a result of all of this, teachers can spend their time with students in class on diving deeper into the material, rather than spending time introducing the topic.
