Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ashtabula District Curriculum

Students in Ashtabula are able to take part in an arts education curriculum that includes the study of music. Younger students acquire basic skills that allow them to participate in the production of music, such as identifying sounds, tempo, and intensity. Learners in the middle grades gain an understanding of pitch and rhythm, and acquire the ability to perform vocal or instrumental music through participation in vocal classes and choir, orchestra, and band.

The English language arts curriculum in Ashtabula helps students build an effective repertoire of skills that allow them to communicate effectively in verbal and written forms in and outside of the English classroom. Various content-related skills are emphasized to assist students in other areas of study, particularly social studies, science, and technical subjects. Children learn to recognize key details and main ideas in content-specific readings. Learning to utilize or interpret content-specific vocabulary is also the focus of the English language arts curriculum.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Experiential Learning

Many schools across the nation have instituted experiential learning techniques in order to enhance the educational experience of students. This form of hands-on learning affords many benefits to students. First, being actively engaged in the material makes learning much more concrete for students. Rather than dealing with abstract concepts, students are able to manipulate objects or examine documents for themselves. Second, experiential learning allows students to apply the knowledge they’ve acquired to practical experiences. For example, students in science class can use their classroom learning to conduct lab experiments that bring their learning to life. Lastly, experiential learning combines various learning styles into one experience, allowing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to equally engage in activities that promote further understanding. From lab experiments to document analyses to field trips, experiential learning is a great method for keeping young learners interested in education.
