Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Astoria District Curriculum

The Math curriculum is focused on the areas of numerical operations, number systems, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. During elementary school, students are introduced to the most fundamental concepts in each of these topics, and then these skills are further developed into a deeper problem-solving sense in each topic so that students can drill down into each area during high school.

The Language Arts curriculum integrates all areas of communication and literacy, so that students have critical awareness of their reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks. Students read for pleasure, for information, and to understand the craft of writing. They also learn to look for examples of elements of writing in literature. By using examples in literature to aid in their writing, students know where to turn when they have difficulty. They are introduced to a process approach that helps them organize ideas, write coherently and persuasively, and present original final work.

Chalk Talk: Planning for Summer Camp

When thinking about summer camps, research the different options in your area. For example, a local science center may hold as many as 10 different camps a week that involve such subject areas as the solar system, the science of makeup, IMAX movies, robotics, oceanography, and many more. Children can attend as many or as few of these camps as they and their parents wish. At the science center, even very young four- and five-year-olds can be exposed to summer camps in a half-day format. Gifted students often have opportunities to attend prestigious academic camps at local universities. Those who excel at certain sports have the option of going to camps that hone skills in their sport. In addition, it is beneficial for children to attend summer camps for social purposes—so that they can make new friends. This is particularly important for elementary-aged children because they likely will lose contact with some of their friends from school during the summer months. With today’s wide array of choices, every child is bound to find a summer camp that fits his/her interests and the needs of his/her family.
