Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Athens District Curriculum

In Mathematics, data-driven instruction is imparted by the teachers. Successful competencies are stressed, such as adaptive and perceptive knowledge, problem solving, the understanding of theory and measured procedures, and developing life-long critical thinking skills. In Language Arts, students are taught the importance of reading and writing from the early years throughout their schooling. Developing comprehension and other reading strategies, the instructors use differentiated instruction within the reading program to ensure literary success for all students.

In Science, hands-on activities are used for the children to discover the unknown using the scientific process, and in Social Studies, learning about the past and how it has played a key role in the present, all while helping students to become engaged in their rights as citizens.

Keeping Informed: Recent Athens Educational News

  • Home to School Connection - Clarke County Schools believe that learning takes place at home, as well as school. Parent involvement is a key factor in academic success. The Home to School Connection is a newsletter which is posted online, as well as in print, for all parents or relatives as parents to receive great ideas for helping their children at home. It also contains recent topics for reading to keep parents in the know about what is happening in their child's educational environment.
  • PLAN Assessment - All sophomore students will be assessed using the PLAN, which is a mock ACT. This test will give the tenth graders an idea of what a true college preparatory standardized test is like. It is very similar to the ACT test, and will cover the subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The students will receive a score which will be a predictor on how they would have done on an actual ACT.
  • The Memory Tree - Leaves on the Memorial Tree at Clarke County High School can be purchased to leave a lasting impression on those who are loved and never forgotten. Students can buy a leave to be put on the bronze tree, and have it engraved with the name of the loved one.

Chalk Talk: Importance of Written Communication

Written communication with your child's teacher is an ideal way to make yourself aware of how your child is progressing in school. If your child is struggling in school in any subject area, keeping a log of your communication with the teacher, through a notebook or even email, can be a worthy tool. This log of communication can be shared with the tutor, and the tutor will be clear on what your child is having difficulty with.

Keeping everything in writing is also valuable when the end of term report cards come home, as you can compare this written communication with the child's report card and be sure that it is consistent. It is always safe to have everything in writing, that way there is no question on how your child is performing in the classroom. Home to school communication can be a great asset in your child's learning, as it is always beneficial to be proactive in your child's education.
