Athens District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Athens City Schools follow multiple types of curriculum. However, all standards are in place to instruct students in such a way to set them up for success. City Park School and Ingleside school have converted their curriculum to Common Core Standards. In the humanities, students are required to read texts and analyze their understanding using new vocabulary and critical thinking. Mathematical comprehension is required for the goal of furthering students understanding by helping them master all fundamental mathematical concepts.

We currently cover the following Athens-area school district: Athens City Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Athens District Curriculum

North City School, Westside School, and Athens City Middle School operate under the standards set by Tennessee’s Department of Education. There are also College and Career Readiness Standards in place so that students are prepared to work collaboratively and have opportunities to think creatively. This is an innovative curriculum focused on analytical skills and literary comprehension. Each student gets individualized help focused on teaching them to further develop their skills.

Learning expectations are set at each grade level for students in all core subjects. For instance, in seventh grade English Language Arts, students read, analyze and evaluate narratives and expository content that explores the theme of how change influences personal growth. In Math, they extend the sixth grade skills in operations and spatial and numerical problems-solving they learned into multi-step problems and problems with percentages. By high school, these abilities become more complex and allow students to do more with their knowledge.

Chalk Talk: The Different Purposes for Tutors

Any experienced tutor will tell you that they are typically hired when a student is failing or doing poorly. However, something that is often overlooked is hiring a tutor when your child is doing well. Tutors are not just for doing the job of reviewing material, but they can also serve to show students a new perspective on learning the material. Tutors are perfect for helping students who are beginning to slip, but it is much harder to correct a problem rather than make a preemptive strike toward keeping students successful. Hiring a tutor when your child is maintaining A’s and B’s is a good way to keep them academically focused, confident, and most of all, doing well in school. It is therefore imperative to make sure your child gets one on one attention from you, a tutor, and teachers. This will keep them learning and foster a love knowledge for the rest of their lives.
