Auburn District and Curriculum

The Auburn Enlarged City School District includes five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The district has three main goals to provide students with a quality curriculum develop leadership among students and provide quality educational opportunities to set goal high standards for performance. Classroom learning is supplemented by excellent art programs, extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports, which give students many opportunities to develop the personal and social skills necessary to be successful citizens.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Auburn District Curriculum

The district has been using the English Language Arts Core Curriculum which focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking in way that demonstrates a control of the English language and the the ability to apply these skills in the real world. Students learn the fundamentals of literary skills in conjunction with the development of critical reasoning and excellent research abilities. At the middle and high school levels students are able to read complex literature and write compositions and reports that use prior knowledge, well researched, and are related to the broader world.

In the area of Math, students in grades K-5 use the Everyday Mathematics program with a focus on developing key math skills. Students in elementary school will also learn the basics of computation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. Middle school students learn to be conversant in algebra, linear equations, rational numbers, and the solving of complex word problems.

Keeping Informed: Recent Auburn Educational News

  • Contest Fun - The students at Auburn Junior High School participated in an ugly Christmas sweater contest and a Pie in a Teacher’s Face contest to raise money for local needy families. The fundraising efforts raised more than $1350 for area families. The winners of the Pie in the Face Contest were teachers Mr. Carberry, Mrs. Sperduti, and Mrs. Spencer. The winners of both contests were announced at the holiday musical concerts.
  • Financial Literacy Learning - Auburn Junior High School recently had a visit from Melissa Flask, a New Business Development Officer from Generations Bank who spoke with seventh grade students about the importance of developing money management skills. The visit was part of the Home and Careers course at the school. The program includes guest speakers who talk about different aspects of business and life skills. The teacher for the program said that having guest speakers allows students in the class to meet successful people from the community and keeps things current.
  • Give and Receive - Students at Genesee Elementary School recently helped to raise money for people affected by Hurricane Sandy along with contributions from staff, teachers, and parents. The students collected more than $400 in donations. On the other side, the students were the recipients of contributions from the community including knitted hats, scarves, and mittens from the seniors at Bluefield Manor, and the Veterans of the Auburn Correctional Facility. Each student also received a food donation from local businesses and anonymous donors.

There is a wonderful site for kids sponsored by the Natural History Museum located in London, England. The site is called Kids Only and provides lots of fun and games for kids all having to do with natural history. This site is perfect for parents with kids who are bored over the weekend and who want something to do. You will find crafts ideas and information on dinosaurs, earth and space, and how to become a ..ologist which includes a look at what paleontologists, entomologists, zoologists and other ‘ologists’ do.
