Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Augusta District Curriculum

Augusta Maine School Department is the home to four elementary schools serving grades K-6th, one High School for 7th-12th grade as well as Adult and Technical Education opportunities. Committed to educate all students with the belief that each individual has worth and special gifts, the curriculum is based on the premise that learning is fun and should be part of a partnership between children, parents, teachers and the community.

For students that excel in all subjects and those that excel in Math, Augusta School Department offers a Gifted and Talented Program, based on standardized test scores as well as grades. These students are able to take accelerated classes and/or online or college level courses. The school district also emphasizes literacy math, history, science and gives students with native languages other than English special learning opportunities to ensure their language development.

Chalk Talk: Choosing an Educational Program

Choosing the school your children attend, for some, can be a deliberating process. If you are moving to a new area and have the opportunity to move in a school zone of your choice, there are many resources out there to help you make the right decision for your family. There are online resources which rate schools based on a wide range of factors such as testing scores, programs offered and feedback. Schools can vary widely, even within the same district. Taking your time to find the right school with the best programs for your child is well worth the effort.
