Avon District and Curriculum

The Avon Public Schools follow the Common Core State Standards of curriculum. With implementation of these standards, the district hopes to create highly educated high school graduates who will have the skills to go on and excel in both the college level and the workforce beyond. They are committed to using common assessments amongst teachers which provides accurate data in showing whether concepts are being mastered by all students. The district also places importance on communicating these with both faculty and parents in making sure all students are successful.

We currently cover the following Avon-area school district: Avon Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Avon District Curriculum

The Common Core Standards provide a path for in depth understanding of content in each subject. In the early years, the focus in English Language Arts is on literacy in reading, writing, and speaking. As each student progress, the curriculum builds upon the previous year and provides students with the ability to increase their vocabulary and critical thinking skills. The writing process is also taught throughout the grades so that students learn how to develop and fully express their ideas in writing.

In Mathematics, the number of required topics each year is reduced allowing time for students to gain a deeper understanding before moving on. The same philosophy applies to Science and Social Studies where high expectation and critical reading and understanding are essential. Students are expected to make connections between the subjects they learn about, that is one of the main goals of learning. These connections help prepare students for real-world experiences.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Traveling

Most children in the United States sit in classrooms surrounded by students who come from countries all over the world. They talk with them, play with them, have lunch with them but they may never really understand where the diversity around them comes from until they travel. Exposure to other cultures, foods, religions, and points of view will become essential for the next generation as they will co-exist in a diverse world and workplace. The barriers of intolerance will be obsolete and we can only hope to jump these barriers by leaving our own doorstep and seeing what else is out there in the world. While you may not be able to fly to the other side of the globe, you can take your child to parts of the city where life and cultures may be different than where you live. Small steps can shape their education within the classroom and create a positive, accepting environment in which to learn.
