Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Avon Lake District Curriculum

Common subjects such as English, Math, Social Studies, and Science along with Physical education and Fine Arts are taught to all students. The core curriculum has a variety of changes, such as no longer requiring a focus on handwriting. Cursive handwriting will be integrated with other subjects such as Language Arts which combines language, phonics, keyboard and writing skills for Kindergarten students through third grade students. However, the primary focus will shift to developing efficient keyboarding skills to help children at using technology.

The curriculum strongly focuses on mastering the competencies in English and Math with the incorporation of parental support for all students. By the time students reach junior grades, they are expected to be able to intensively read a variety of non-fiction materials and research and analyze information effectively in the content area.

Chalk Talk: Extracurricular Athletics

Life is like baseball. We hope to hit a home run but sometimes we are fortunate if we can get to second or third base. These values of winning and competitive play have been unconsciously ingrained in us since we were very young. We are taught that winning is good and losing is bad. However, teachers need to teach students that there are only sore losers on the field and in life - those who exhibit a poor attitude. We can learn a lot from playing baseball, tennis or football. If we believe in our strength and our ability to win and overcome obstacles, we can succeed. Playing sports helps encourage students to develop athletic ability but also to understand how to manage a team, encourage a team to win, and show empathy when the team has lost. In fact, learning a sport not only improves our physical fitness but social skills and emotional intelligence. Playing a sport helps give us confidence to tackle other academic challenges in life that require coordination, focus and ambition.
