Babylon school’s use the Go Math program for students in kindergarten through 6th grade. This curriculum focuses on and supports the revised Common Core Math Standards and builds skills across grade levels. It is designed to help students use math facts easily, think fast and solve problems. Middle and high school students are challenged to develop a real understanding of more complex mathematical principals and how to use them in the real world.

The district employs a balanced literacy approach and uses both whole group and small group instruction to support reading and language arts skill development. The reading program includes both guided and independent reading of a wide variety of challenging fiction and non-fiction texts. • Kindness Counts - At Babylon Elementary “It’s Cool to be Kind”. Students at the school are participating in a year-long program created to prevent bullying and promote positive relationships among all students. Students are asked to take a pledge promising to be kind to each other and act and speak in caring ways. They are then given a bracelet reading “It’s Cool to be Kind” and “Kindness Starts With Me. Both students and staff are proud of the “Kindness Tree” located in the main lobby that contains leaves describing acts of kindness displayed by others. Students “caught being kind” also receive “It’s Cool to be Kind” stickers from staff during the school year
  • Brown-Bag Enrichment Program - The Brown-Bag Enrichment Program at Babylon Memorial Grade School provides students with the opportunity to explore and learn about a variety of engaging subjects from local professionals and experts. Recently students learned about cave diving from their science teacher. Through an interactive discussion, students learned about cave diving, the equipment needed, why people choose to cave dive and the various places their teacher had visited to cave dive. They also were showed clips of night diving. Students followed up their “brown bag” session by using Google Chrome to research cave diving locations around the world.
  • Planning for College - Babylon High School is helping prepare its freshman class for college. To help students understand the requirements for college admission and to “experience” what college life may be like, all ninth-graders had the opportunity to visit Long Island University’s Post Brookville campus. The program’s objective is to help students understand the connection between present and future academic success. Students met with members of the school’s admission team, visited various program offices offered at the college, took a campus tour and participated in engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading

Parents often ask how I can motivate my child to read. Educational experts seem to agree that reading to your frequently may help to inspire a love of reading. The following recommendations may also help your child become an eager reader. Begin something that your child really wants to read. Even a comic, joke book or sports magazine can boost literacy skills. Sometimes e-books downloaded on a favorite smartphone or tablet can motivate the most reluctant reader to read. Read and re-read. Even if it’s the same book, children love and learn through repetition. This can help them read more easily and with confidence. Reading aloud provides “together time” and helps children build their vocabularies. Create opportunities throughout the day for reading and writing –read signs in the supermarket, write notes, letters, e-mails or text messages. On road trips play word games. If you are worried, don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher or doctor to recommend additional resources to help your child develop a love of reading.
