Ballwin District and Curriculum

The Ballwin school districts foster academic success for each student, recognizing that differentiation in learning and teaching styles is a key to reaching every student’s greatest potential. District curricula are consistently revised to keep the material and the trainings on the cutting edge of pedagogical knowledge. We currently cover the following Ballwin-area school districts: Parkway Schools and Rockwood School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ballwin District Curriculum

The Math curriculum is structured around a strong foundation of basic arithmetic skills, pattern recognition, and number theory. Addition, subtraction, division and multiplication form the basis for all other math subjects from early grades through high school. Mathematical literacy is promoted through regular practice of math concepts, and application to other subjects. In upper grades, a diverse set of math courses allows students to recognize the applications of calculus, statistics, and algebraic functions.

English Language Arts curricula strongly encourage and reinforce a deep understanding of reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in a diverse global society. Beginning in the early grades, and progressing on through middle and high school, students analyze and critique a broad range of non-fiction and fiction texts, while developing strong research and argumentative writing skills. Elective topics include mythology and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Chalk Talk: Playing – It’s Educational!

When we acknowledge the skill of actors on a movie screen, or when we watch children at play, we are accessing a fundamental human trait: Play is fun, and engaging, and it helps us learn. When we engage in play, whether it is roleplaying in an English or history class, or playing a game to learn anatomy terms, we are immersing ourselves in the sheer joy of learning. We place internal competition on our goals to strive to do better—whether it is to reach a top score, or to perfectly execute a monologue, or whether it is interacting with classmates and colleagues to learn a new topic through a video production or a skit. This revamped, learning goal oriented version of play helps us stay engaged in the material we are learning, and gives us a sense of ownership over what we learn. Don’t discount the value of games and play in the learning process—the process truly is educational!
