Chalk Talk: How Sleep Impacts Grades

It is a common fact that sleep deprivation affects many people, especially students with effects on concentration, lack of focus, declining academic performance and increased stress. Studies have shown that students who get at least of eight hours of sleep get better grades, are more physically and mentally healthy and have better appetites. Sleep deprivation can be a problem with university students cramming for several exams while managing work shifts. However, when the ability to gain more restful sleep is not an option, students can try relaxing in a deep meditative state for a few hours a day daily rather than forcing oneself to get to sleep at night. Relaxing with a good book, or taking a bubble bath as well as meditating using a guided visualization are helpful remedies for insomniacs. Lack of sleep may be caused by worry or tension about academic performance and career goals. However, the paradox is that lack of sleep only exacerbates tension and worry which reinforces lack of sleep Engaging in activities like yoga relaxation or prayer can ease the mind and soothe away tension and worry.
