Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bartlesville District Curriculum

In Mathematics, standards taught in the primary grades include number sense and algebraic basics. In patterning, the students are given strategies on how to determine “what comes next” in a continuing pattern. When teaching patterns, teachers begin instructing the concept by using shapes in a mixture of patterns, ranging from simple patterns using two variables to increasing the difficulty by using three to four variables. After this is mastered, students learn how to complete other patterns using number sequences.

In English Language Arts, the students read a wide variety of fiction. Many types of fiction, such as realistic fiction, poetry, mysteries, dramas, and other fiction texts are read. Short stories as well as chapter books and novels are enjoyed by the students. Within the reading of fiction, the students study various elements of the literature, such as character traits, compare and contrast, making connections, new vocabulary, setting, main idea, and theme.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Elementary History Teacher

Many subjects can be taught and reinforced with history. The elementary history teacher has the responsibility of teaching the students the events of the past and making it lively for the students. History can be incorporated with English Language Arts through the reading of non-fiction and doing many culminating activities, such as role playing, presentations, field trips, and more. The elementary history teacher is very knowledgeable about historic events, and also is one to allow the students to form their own opinions about past events.
