Chalk Talk: Biographies for Kids

Biographies are great to read, as they can give children insight into the lives of historical figures, authors, artists, entertainers, and other well-known individuals. Mae Woods wrote a biography about the famous Dr. Seuss—entitled “Children’s Authors: Dr. Seuss”—that gives readers information on how Dr. Seuss got his name; his early life; his first jobs; his first children’s story, “On Mulberry Street”; one of his most popular books, “The Cat in the Hat”; his famous Grinch character; his last book, “Oh, the Place’s You’ll Go!”; and his legacy. Another recommended biography for children is “Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists: Georges Seurat”, written and illustrated by Mike Venezia. This book not only details the artist’s life and his most famous paintings, but it also provides a great art lesson for children, as it describes Seurat’s techniques, such as Pointillism and Neo-Impressionism. The illustrations include Seurat’s actual works and humorous cartoons created by Venezia. Both of these biographies are in picture book format.
