Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bath District Curriculum

Instruction at the primary level includes focused lessons in English language arts and mathematics, in addition to other core academic subjects. Students have access to a Character Education Program and Assertive Discipline Model to learn socially appropriate responses and behaviors. The middle school curriculum also provides students with social and emotional guidance, while providing increasingly more rigorous academic instruction. Its pedagogical approach is based on “teaming” and collaboration. The Dana L. Lyon Middle School also has a Gifted and Talented Program, as well as a Character Education Program.

High school students can earn a diploma while preparing for college and/or career. The school offers students advanced placement (AP) courses, courses for college credit (ACE), vocational training, and other school-to-work options. HHS provides courses in the following departments: art, English language arts, foreign language, health, mathematics, music, physical education, science, social studies, technology, and yearbook.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Motivation

Motivation is the force (visible or invisible) that encourages people to complete tasks. Students need motivation to achieve academic goals. Some motivation is extrinsic, an external reward to produce; this motivation is visible, like a trip to the mall or a piece of candy. Extrinsic motivation can prompt students to complete a task, study hard for an assignment, or sign up for a class that a parent wants his or her child to take. Unfortunately, extrinsic forces only last for a short time and work less effectively than another type of inspiration—intrinsic motivation. Intrinsically motivated students do not need external bribes or rewards to perform. These students have an invisible force within them, an internal inspiration to make good grades, take challenging courses, or achieve long-term academic goals. Intrinsic motivation can be hard to create. Features of this type of motivation are perseverance, enthusiasm, and focus.
