Battle Ground District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Battle Ground School District operates under the philosophy that all students can learn, and all students have the right to learn. To this end, they have developed a comprehensive curriculum beginning in Kindergarten that ensures students have the skills necessary to succeed in every aspect of their education. English Language Arts, Math, and Science at the elementary level focuses on basic skills students will need to succeed. The students focus on phonics, word recognition and fluency in reading and on applying vocabulary and strategies learned in reading to their writing. In math, students learn number sense and how numbers work together to solve a problem. Students begin science in Kindergarten where they learn to question phenomena in the world around them and begin to ask questions and solve problems.

We currently cover the following Battle Ground-area school district: Battle Ground Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Northridge District Curriculum

In middle and high school, the skills learned in elementary school are applied to more in-depth content. In English Language Arts, students still work on phonics and reading skills, but also begin to analyze literary text, read for information, and write for clarity and effectiveness. The math curriculum applies the number sense and algorithms learned in elementary school to Algebra and Geometry. Students are able to take math courses through Calculus, if they choose. The inquiry and problem-solving skills learned in elementary school are applied to the content areas of Biology, and other science courses necessary to understand the natural world around them.

The English Language Arts curriculum in the district is structured and designed so students build on skills and concepts learned the year before. In ninth and tenth grade students’ focus on vocabulary development, analytical reading and writing, critical thinking and presentations skills.

Chalk Talk: Tutors for Children with Learning Disabilities

At times, children with special needs require help away from school. Finding a tutor may require parents asking themselves specific questions. Before looking decide what the expectations are from a tutor. Do they need special skills or will they be required to complete specific tasks. Next, make a list of behavior and academic traits that the child may have to aid the tutor. Finally, decide if the tutor is going to need to be a link between home and the teacher. If this is the case, make sure that the time and resources are available for the tutor to do this. This type of tutor may take a little more work because the tutor’s temperament needs to be considered as well as how they handle difficult situations. Before hiring a tutor, talk with parents of other children with disabilities and parents need to talk with their child also. The tutor and the child need to feel comfortable with each other so they need to have input into the hiring.
