Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bayonne District Curriculum
The district hopes to instill in students a life-long appreciation for the written and spoken word. In order to accomplish this, their Language Arts courses are designed to expose children to texts that are both timeless and timely. For example, students read The Odyssey as well as the works of young adult author, Walter Dean Myers. They also read and write about stories that explore the American experience in current and former times.
Mathematics at Bayonne are taught with the long-term goal of post-school success. Elementary students learn and explore the base ten number system and also begin to become familiar with geometry, fractions, decimals, measurement and algebraic thinking. In middle school, students broaden their familiarity with geometry and algebra and also learn to think more analytically and critically about math. In high school, students continue to deepen their knowledge of algebra and geometry and begin learning advanced math, such as calculus.

Keeping Informed: Recent Bayonne Educational News
- Constitution Competition Honors - Students from Bayonne High School delivered formal presentations on constitutional issues in the New Jersey State Simulated Legislative Hearings for High School Students which was held at the State House in Trenton. They placed third in the competition.
- Green Schools - Bayonne School District introduced its new environmental awareness initiative called B.I.G.S (Bayonne Initiates Green Schools). The program aims to provide students with greater understanding about the environment and their impact on it.
- Safety Grant - The Bayonne Board of Education was awarded a safety grant of $70,075 from the New Jersey School Boards Association Insurance Group. The grant rewarded the Board of Education for its commitment to risk management.

Physical Education (PE) has been a mandatory part of the education equation for decades. However, PE’s importance has never been more important than it is today. For many children, PE is the only opportunity for physical exercise. As kids spend more and more recreational time on computers and other electronic devices, they are spending less and less time playing outside, riding bicycles and participating in organized sports. School children are exposed to healthy habits such as exercise, healthful eating and good grooming in Physical Education class. PE also helps to promote cooperative collaboration to students as they learn to play team and partner sports. PE also helps students’ self-esteem as they learn to challenge themselves to do better and learn new skills. PE continues to be a very important part of the curriculum for students of all ages.
