Chalk Talk: The Importance of Writing
As the Common Core State Standards are implemented nationwide, districts are integrating writing across the curriculum. The Common Core focuses on three primary kinds of writing: expository, narrative and persuasive. The purpose behind incorporating these writing styles across the curriculum is so children learn the various styles of writing and develop the skills needed to be successful writers in a variety of contexts. Students don’t just express opinions in writing in their language arts class. They also defend their positions when writing essays for social studies. Students in art class can offer critiques of their art or the art of others in critical reviews. Lab reports in science class require similarly well-developed writing skills. The point being, English language arts is not something that exists in a vacuum. Instead, students should be able to apply the knowledge and skills they learn in English class to the multitude of situations they encounter every day.
