Beaufort District and Curriculum

Beaufort County School District boasts of the motto “where learning leads the way.” The schools have implemented the Common Core State Standards in Math and English Language Arts in order to give their students the tools they need for success. The expectations set the stage for students to be ready for college or work, and imparts the necessary problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills need in post-secondary pursuits.

We currently cover the following Beaufort-area school district: Beaufort County School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beaufort District Curriculum

Unlike the past state curriculum, the Common Core math standards have a greater focus in each year of study. Students focus on fewer concepts but at greater depth. They master the concepts to a greater degree and therefore require less review in their future math classes. The focus on core topics including operations, algebraic relationships, geometry, and probability/statistics builds over the years and students develop a great range of problem-solving skills.

In English Language Arts classes, students synthesize and write about both literature and non-fiction. They are able to comprehend the written word in all subjects across the content areas including not only English, but also Science and Social Studies. They are taught how to use text features, recognize an author’s purpose, and to evaluate the quality of information. These practices will provide students with the skills to be successful in college and the workforce.

Chalk Talk: Reading Leads to Success

It is common to hear how reading helps children be successful in the classroom and the real world. The question is what does this look like in the home. Consider turning off the television and other electronic devices for thirty minutes after dinner. Gather the family and read through an appropriate novel over the course of several weeks. If reading aloud is not your thing, have everyone spend time reading different books silently together. Adults and older children can take turns reading with younger ones. The important thing is that parents should model the behavior for their children.
