Chalk Talk: Why Literacy is Essential

Literacy is more than reading and writing; it is the ability to attain knowledge about specific subjects. The ability to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate text is of the highest cognitive functions, yet the ability to read for understanding is one of the simplest tasks humans do daily. Everyone needs to be able to read literature that is pertinent to his or her needs. Scholars and researchers need to be able to dissect complicated empirical articles to identify and synthesize arguments. Job applicants must follow directions correctly and respond appropriately to written directives. Every day, people learn about various functions through reading directions to build objects, prepare food, and travel to a specific destination. Literacy skills mean awareness of vocabulary, punctuation, and even cultural expressions. Those who take care to learn about the literacy specific to their needs will succeed in most any task.
