Chalk Talk: Tips for Taking the ACT

Before taking the ACT, there are many tricks students can utilize in order to be prepared for testing day. There are an abundance of resource online and in print that can help students prepare, including a number of practice tests. Taking these tests familiarizes students with the layout of the test, and also introduces them to the way that instructions and questions are worded. The night before the test, students should get as much rest as possible, and the morning of the test, they should eat a good breakfast in order to have the fuel their brain will need to perform at its best. Once in the testing session, carefully reading the instructions for each section will help students understand what it is they are to do. When working on answering questions, it’s a good plan to skip the difficult questions and come back to them later. This helps avoid a situation in which time runs out with a lot of unanswered questions remaining. Also, by answering the easier questions first students can build up their confidence in order to take on more difficult questions later on.
