Beckwith District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The districts that students from Beckwith attend use the Ontario Curriculum as the model for developing subject-area proficiency in core academics and extends this model into the additional programs offered for enrichment or skills training. The curriculum lays out the series of learning objectives that students are expected to achieve at their grade levels and formal assessments in core subjects are designed to ensure that students have reached these learning expectations. Students are challenged to achieve their highest potential in the classroom, on the field of play, and in life in general.

We currently cover the following Beckwith-area school districts: Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beckwith District Curriculum

The alignment of instructional planning, classroom teaching, and assessments has become a central facet to educational planning. Having measures that provide a picture of what students are able to do, where teachers need to increase instruction, and the strengths and weaknesses which students are developing, strengthens the entire educational process. The Ontario Curriculum places an emphasis on the early and intermediate learning in Math and Language Arts courses as these represent the literacy, communication, and problem-solving abilities they will rely on during their secondary years.

During their school years, students also have opportunities to engage in community service projects, environmental and community initiatives, and extracurricular organizations at their school or in their community. Through these projects, students are able to recognize where their talents may lead them as well as teach valuable lessons about planning and executing creative and collaborative projects. The goal of the curriculum is to provide more than a traditional academic experience, although a focus on student achievement in core academics is essential to the successful outcomes foreseen in the curriculum.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education

The physical education curriculum helps students develop the skills required for physical activity and devise an understanding of what physical fitness and wellness means for them. Students acquire both fine and gross motor skills that are necessary for participation in physical activities. Children play games, individual sports, and team sports to put their skills to the test. Students demonstrate competency in performing sequences of movements, such as throwing or kicking a ball. Learners also acquire the ability to use tactics and strategies in order to improve performance during game play. The physical education curriculum focuses on promoting frequent physical activity. Children are encouraged to be active each day in order to promote overall health. Students learn about the health benefits of regular exercise, and conversely, learn about the detriments of leading a sedentary lifestyle.
