Bedminster District and Curriculum
The Bedminster Township School District simply consists of one school, the Bedminster Township Public School, which houses approximately 550 students from grades PK-8. The district has a partnership with Somerset Hills School District, which houses Bedminster students in its Bernards High School once they reach ninth grade. The progression of learning from elementary to secondary school is guided by the New Jersey Curriculum Content Standards, which are rigorous and require that students develop mastery in a range of skills, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities.
We currently cover the following Bedminster-area school districts: Bedminster Township Public School and Somerset Hills School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bedminster District Curriculum
The New Jersey Curriculum Content Standards are “internationally benchmarked,” meaning the curriculum from ten different countries were examined to help determine expectations for student performance in science. The standards also focus on the core ideas in science, which include concepts that are important across multiple disciplines within science (“crosscutting concepts”), are relevant to the real world and students’ lives, are teachable and learnable across multiple grade levels.
The curriculum incorporates the Common Core Standards and the New Jersey Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCS). The curriculum committee is currently working towards aligning the science curriculum with the Next Generation Science Standards, which the state of New Jersey has adopted, and full implementation is expected by 2017. Similarly to the Common Core Standards, these Next Generation Science Standards are coherent across grade levels and disciplines and provide students with the practice they need to be prepared for college.

Chalk Talk: Trends in Education: Stand-Up Desks
One thing in education that has evolved little over the decades is the student desk. However, that may be changing, as a smattering of schools around the U.S. are testing stand-up desks in their classrooms. These are raised desks designed to be used without seats, in a standing position. Stand-up desks allow students to move around more—many even include a “fidget bar” for students’ feet—which can be important, as it can be difficult for students to sit still for so many hours. Research has shown that, when students are standing, they show more mental alertness and are more engaged. Also, widespread studies have reported that individuals who sit for many hours during the day are susceptible to various serious health issues, and the use of stand-up desks helps burn more calories, which is important in the fight against childhood obesity. Since these studies have come to light, many workplaces have started to use stand-up desks and even desks attached to treadmills, so it is no surprise that they are being tested in schools as well.
