Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Beekman District Curriculum

The districts English Language Arts curriculum is guided by standards that encourage students to learn to read a wide variety of texts closely and attentively. The curriculum also encourages students to use the skill of close, attentive reading as a base on which to develop other literacy skills such as speaking, writing, and listening. Students also learn a significant part of their research and library skills in these classes.

The schools’ math curriculum is guided by standards that encourage students to develop fundamental mathematics skills such as problem solving and abstract reasoning in the earliest grades. Math objectives are separated into the categories of counting, algebraic thinking, number and operations, measurement and data, geometry, and basic math facts. Science is divided into the specific areas of learning for that grade, such as life cycles, and weather. The standards then go on to encourage students to use their knowledge of these skills to solve real world problems.

Chalk Talk: Planning for College

There are many considerations for families to take into account when planning for college, and of course, at the top of the list is cost. Tuition costs at private universities is very high and generally requires that students apply for loans and scholarships, a process which should start as early as possible. Students should look for scholarships that dovetail their specific talents, interests, and goals. Local organizations often offer scholarships based on application, and a plan for applying for the most possible scholarships should be made so the process can be managed effectively. Many state schools have transfer scholarships for students coming specifically from a local community college, so that can help as well. Whether or not you decide to take out loans, make sure you consider your options and what will be best for you in the long run. It may help you significantly in the long run.
