Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belle Fourche District Curriculum

In K-12 Reading, students are challenged on a daily basis to develop their abilities. Students are taught how to think critically, to analyze, and to synthesize information in the subject, as well as the other core subjects of history and science. Students are taught the “art” of reading for pleasure, as they are given many types of genres to read, as well as many reflective exercises, such as writing, collaboration with peers, discussions, presentations, and comprehension drills to practice critical thinking skills, and taking the next steps in the reading process.

In Math, the students are moving into deeper thinking exercises, such as algebra, using integers in problem solving, geometry, and graphing and beginning statistical equations. The goal is for students to develop abilities in each of these major areas with the end result that they can approach any mathematic problem and determine the best way to solve it. Additionally, the development of logical and abstract reasoning is a part of the critical thinking strategies brought about through curriculum.
