Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belle Plaine District Curriculum

An important aspect of Belle Plaine’s middle school social studies curriculum is the study of geography. Students learn how to effectively use geospatial tools to develop an understanding of the world in which we live. Learners use maps, online tools, satellite images, and the like to process information about landforms, population movement, and the climate. Major physical features in Minnesota are discussed, and students utilize their mapping tools to identify the precise location of those features.

In their high school science classes, Belle Plaine students have the opportunity to learn about the nature and practice of science and engineering. Learners identify a problem with an engineering design, and propose likely solutions to overcome those problems. To do so, students utilize conceptual, mathematical, and physical models to evaluate how and to what extent their solutions address the problem at hand. The role of society in the development of science and engineering practices is evaluated as well.

Chalk Talk: Three Tips for Success in Science

Science may not be every child’s favorite subject, but it is nonetheless a critical aspect of their overall education. There are many strategies that students who struggle in science can utilize to increase their success. Taking good notes is a skill that will benefit any child in any subject, but particularly so in science. With so much information to take in, having good notes to refer to will help in information retention. Another way to boost achievement in science is to brush up on math skills. Algebra, in particular, is used a lot in science courses, so students should practice their algebra skills to keep that knowledge fresh in their minds. Lastly, science often makes use of group work, so working well with others, listening to others’ input, and speaking up in the group can help students better understand scientific concepts and experimental processes.
