Chalk Talk: Why Public Speaking Is Important
Although most people would rank public speaking as one of their greatest fears, it is nonetheless an important skill for students to master. While not all kids will grow up and enter a profession that requires speaking to groups, the skills that public speakers are able to develop benefit them in other areas of their lives. People that have mastered public speaking have increased self-confidence. Being confident is a personal quality that is important in interpersonal relationships, for job interviews, and for communicating with friends, family, and strangers alike. In turn, this self-confidence makes good public speakers comfortable in interpersonal situations as well. Good public speakers are also great conversationalists: they know what to say and when, and they are also adept at listening and asking questions. Being an effective public speaker facilitates improved leadership skills as well. Being able to lead, whether at school, at home, or at work, is a critical skill needed for people to achieve their highest level of success.
