Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bellevue District Curriculum

Students learn reading, writing, math and science as well as the many other courses essential to a well rounded education such as social studies, technology education, physical education and more. The Core subjects do have standardized testing to help evaluate if students are learning at a proficient level. The assessments have many goals beside measuring achievement for individual students; they also highlight areas where more instruction is needed and provide a snapshot of how each school is succeeding in educating the students.

Middle and high school students within the district are offered many opportunities to take classes which will equip them for their own after high school goals, whether they are vocational or academic. There are two local career technical centers where students can learn. Also, students are offered AP classes and many elective programs as well as athletic opportunities, arts groups, and community service opportunities.

Chalk Talk: How to Select a Good Tutor

If your child is struggling in school, what they may need is a good tutor to get them through this rough patch. Before you make this decision, talk to their teacher and find out from them if they think it would be helpful. They may also have referrals for good tutors or tutoring services. Once you have established that your child could benefit from a tutor, take a bit of time to write down what is needed. On your list consider questions such as: what is your child’s learning style? Specifically, what does he or she need help with? How much do you want to pay for the service? How often does your child need tutoring and for how long in each session? What time will you and your child be available for tutoring? If there are any other considerations such as personalities your child absolutely cannot work with, you may want to note that as well. Decide who your child’s tutor should be based on the needs of your child which you have listed. Remember that if one tutor doesn’t work out, you may always try another.
