Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bellfontaine Neighbors District Curriculum

Teachers have the autonomy to tailor their lessons to the needs of individual students, whether that means students who’ve fallen behind grade or students who need more challenging assignments to remain interested. Critical thinking and writing skills as well as problem solving and science literacy is stressed. Students are taught to be good communicators and good listeners. Students are also offered a variety of extracurricular opportunities from sport teams to play on, music groups to perform with, and an assortment of academic and art clubs.

Students are encouraged to become active in their school community. It is hoped that they will develop habits which will lead to them becoming involved in their community after they graduate. Students are held to high expectations in the hopes that they will take advantage of their own education and become lifelong learners.

Chalk Talk: Early Action

Early Action (EA) applications are early, non-binding applications. This means that the student applies usually by November 15th, but they are free to apply elsewhere. Because the application is early, these students are looked upon favorably, and acceptance rates are higher for EA applications, though not as high as Early Decision applicants. Even though it might seem stress-inducing to have to apply early, this can also mean students receive a decision much earlier, often in January. If this is the student’s top choice college, this means the student might be done with applications and ready to move on to financial aid and even housing. Many colleges offer EA applications, and not Early Decision applications, because they feel that the binding nature of Early Decision is unfair; EA solves this problem while giving many of the same, or similar benefits.
