Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bellfontaine District Curriculum

The Bellefontaine world languages curriculum is intended to provide children an opportunity to develop second language skills while also learning about a culture different from their own. Students devise the skills they need to communicate in a second language, be that in written or spoken form. Learners also acquire the knowledge required to fully comprehend works written in a second language. These skills allow students to communicate on three levels: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.

The social studies curriculum in Bellefontaine begins in elementary school where children develop basic social studies skills. This includes developing an understanding of historical and spatial skills. Children learn that time can be measured and that over time a people’s heritage is passed down from one generation to the next. Students learn about the relationship between people and environments, and learn how models and maps can be used to locate specific areas.

Chalk Talk: How Art Benefits Students

Children who take an arts class derive many benefits from their studies. A deeper appreciation for artistic movements and genres is certainly a benefit, as it opens the minds of children to multiple perspectives. Beyond that, art offers many academic benefits as well. Students who participate in the arts demonstrate a higher level of achievement than their peers. This includes higher scores on standardized measures of math, literacy, and English language skills. When the arts is paired with math studies, children acquire more advanced skills more quickly, particularly children who come from low-income families. Participation in the arts develops critical thinking skills as well. The comparisons and critiques kids must make when evaluating art fosters the development of higher-ordered thinking skills.
