Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bellmead District Curriculum
The language arts curriculum emphasizes reading, writing and other forms of communication and places emphasis on students ability to analyze and interpret what they are reading. Learners study the plot of each text, and explore how characters develop as the plot progresses over the course of the story. Students also analyze how an author’s point of view impacts the manner in which he or she presents information. They also develop writing skills to complement their range of reading, and in this strand of learning objectives places a focus on grammar, conventions, and language use.
Once students have mastered basic operations, pattern and shape recognition in math, they begin to move into more complex topics. Students will learn how to perform operations with fractions, decimals, percents, and negative numbers. There is also an emphasis on the ability to analyze quantitative data. Different types of graphs, such as pie charts and histograms, are used to explain data as well. Throughout the math curriculum, students are required to clearly and effectively communicate their mathematical thinking and understanding.

Chalk Talk: Helping Children with Spelling
Some children struggle with spelling but there are ways that parents can help them at home. First of all, when they come across a written word, have them tell what it says. This can apply to toothpaste, brand names or labels with their names. Another help is when the parent writes a note or a letter, they can talk to themselves as they write to help the child see the thinking process when writing. It is also a good idea to have the child dictate a letter for the parent to write and then the child reads it back to the parent when it is finished. Reading is another way to help the speller. By pointing out words while the parent and child read a book together, parents can help to show the sounds that each letter makes within the words. These ideas are good starting points for parents, and if the parent feels they would like more suggestions, they can talk with the teacher.
