Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bemidji District Curriculum

Algebra is a key component of the high school math curriculum in Bemidji. Students are introduced to functions, which they then use to evaluate domains. Using graphs of functions, students identify minima, maxima, and intervals of increase or decrease as well. Learners also work with parabolas and develop the ability to identify the vertex, line of symmetry, and intersect points. Asymptotes are another important part of understanding the algebra curriculum. Students work with asymptotes to identify the exponential functions and reciprocals of linear functions

The economics aspect of the high school social studies curriculum helps students gain an understanding of essential economic principles. Students learn about the decision-making process when it comes to making purchases. Learners investigate factors that influence those decisions and compare the similarities and differences between buyer behavior at the individual, family, business, and government levels. Students work on devising personal financial goals as well. Plans are made for financial security and success, including proposed methods to save money for future needs, such as retirement.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Play

Time during the school day to let loose and have fun is essential for student success. Yet, despite this, recess is becoming somewhat a thing of the past. Research shows that playtime gives kids an opportunity to learn skills that are essential for their success in academics and in life in general. Play helps children learn how to communicate effectively, set and achieve goals, and work as part of a larger team. Children also gain a greater sense of self-awareness through play, both from a physical and social standpoint. High school students learn how to resolve conflicts in the context of game play. Students demonstrate an ability to follow rules of games and sports as well. Ensuring the safety of self and others is likewise a topic of discussion. The social aspect of play is particularly important because it places kids in a natural setting in which to practice how to effectively interact with one another.
