Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Benson District Curriculum
The English Language/Arts/Literacy programs are designed to ensure that students are proficient in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Language by the time they graduate high school. Students begin in Kindergarten by learning letter sounds and shapes, as well as how to write them. They learn listening skills by hearing stories read to them and comprehension is learned by answering questions about the stories and drawing pictures that represent certain parts of the stories.
Math skills are learned by using objects to add and subtract, as well as learning number recognition. Students learn to organize and group objects by shapes to prepare them for higher level mathematics they will be learning in higher grades. Each progressing year represents a stair step, as students learn new skills that are built upon skills learned in previous years. The goal is to ensure that students have all of the types of quantitative and logical reasoning skills they will need by the time they graduate from high school.

Chalk Talk: Why It Is Important to Visit Historical Sites
Some parents may wonder why it is important to take their children to visit historic sites and museums. The simple fact is that just reading the history books can be boring for some children. When you live in an area like Benson, you have opportunities galore to let history come alive for your children. Actually, no matter what the children are studying in school, there are ways to make everything come to life. Visiting different historic sites and museums add the visuals and personal experiences that go hand in hand with the text in the history books. If you make things interesting and exciting for your children they will develop a love for learning instead of dreading it. So, take all of the trips you can to increase your child's sense of wonder and awe.
