Self-esteem is a child's ability to feel capable and loved. It is important because when children know their strengths and weaknesses and have positive feelings about themselves, they can more easily handle challenges and disappointments. There are many ways that parents can help their children develop self-esteem: Praise children not only for their successes but also for their efforts. Be a positive role model by being optimistic and nurturing your own self-esteem. Help children set realistic standards. Be affectionate and praise your children often. Give positive, guiding feedback about your children's behavior. Create a safe home where children feel comfortable and are able to express themselves. Help your children become involved in positive experiences such as volunteering and contributing to your community. Self-esteem develops throughout a child's life and parental guidance, effort, and teamwork is invaluable.
