Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bergenfield District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Bergenfield Public Schools is driven by two guidelines. The Common Core Standards outline content taught in math and language arts. Student learning in health and physical education, world languages, 21st century life and careers, technology, visual and performing arts, science and social studies is directed by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

Bergenfield’s social studies curriculum focuses not only on an appreciation for and understanding of historical events, but also on developing an appreciation for other cultures and preparing students for active citizenship in the 21st Century. Students evaluate civics, government and human rights in terms of what makes laws good or bad. They are challenged to identify issues in their community and develop a plan to address the problem with the support of local leaders. Students learn the value of advocacy, and develop projects that allow them to act on behalf of populations that have a diminished voice.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Choosing a Vocational School

Attending a vocational or career school is an excellent choice for many high school graduates. Vocational education has the benefit of being less expensive and requiring less time to complete a degree or certificate program. But choosing the right vocational school requires some diligence. Some schools have a track record of lying to students about the programs they offer and the cost of getting one’s degree or certificate. As well, some schools have advertised themselves as being accredited institutions when they are not. Before committing time, energy and money to attending a vocational school, make sure you do your homework. Check to see what credentials the school has. What governing body is the school accredited by? Also do a quick Internet search of the school. What are past graduates saying? Does the school seem to have a good reputation? Another good idea is to talk to your school’s guidance counselor. They will likely have information about a school’s reputation, and if not, they will know where to get it.
