Berkeley District and Curriculum
Berkeley area schools use the curriculum adopted by the state of California that is a standards-based model for setting learning expectations which bring about higher-order thinking skills that prepare students for future academic and career pursuits. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Berkeley District Curriculum

This design promotes critical thinking and problem-solving as students are on a path of deepening their knowledge.

- Gardening and Cooking Program - Local area schools are trying to develop a Gardening and Cooking Program. This is both an environmental and culinary learning experince for students. With nationwide campaigns about obesity and healthy eating options, the Berkeley schools are trying to pioneer new learning models that can be adopted elsewhere.
- Immersion Programs - The school district is pursuing the implementation of a Spanish-English Immersion Program for young students. In such a program instruction is conducted in both Spanish and English and after a few years in the program students generally emerge bilingual.
- Green Academy- One of the small schools within Berkeley High is a Green Academy where students participate in the core curriculum but also learn about environmental sciences, stewardship, sustainability and many other cutting edge areas of the field.
