Chalk Talk: Great Reasons to Read Often

If your child struggles to read or just doesn’t like it, it’s important for you to encourage them to read as much as possible. Children who struggle to read will only get better with practice, and children who prefer to play video games rather than read can also garner many benefits. Reading is a great way to relax. Studies show that when people read blood pressure and heart rate are reduced. As such, reading is an effective pre-bed preparation for a good night’s sleep. Reading also improves vocabulary, reading comprehension and memory skills. Students who read often consistently perform better on standardized tests. Lastly, reading is a great way for children to learn empathy. By losing themselves in a character’s story, children learn how to identify with others and experience the character’s emotions.
