Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Berkley District Curriculum

To be successful at college or in a career, students are required to read extensively from a large selection of materials, such as high-quality stories, poems, and dramas. In addition, reading materials from science, social studies, art, and other disciplines will help students be successful readers throughout their lives. Throughout the curriculum, an emphasis is on communication and problem-solving skills and the development of critical thinking.

The district has accepted the Common Core State Standards as a model for their curriculum. This curriclum helps students build the skills to succeed at the multitude of high level courses in all subjects. At the secondary level, Advanced Placement and career-driven courses are offered. Technology is integrated into learning at all levels as tools in the classroom to areas of study. Students are also encouraged to participate in the extracurricular activities which have been organized by the efforts of teachers, administrators, and volunteers.

Keeping Informed: Recent Berkley Educational News

  • Technology Grant - Baycoast Bank has given the Somerset Berkley Regional High School a $17,500 technology grant. With this money, the high school is able to bring its students to the head of the class in regards to technological advances in the classroom.
  • Strategic Planning - The regional school committee has been looking at ways to cut costs in order to devote more money for academics. They have looked at a new food service arrangement, or the possibility of sharing a transportation plan with neighboring school districts.
  • Innovative Writing Program - Writing is fun? That’s what students at Berkley Community School learned when they, via a Skype presentation, assisted a beloved poet in writing some poetry. The activity was fun for students, and they were learning at the same time.

Chalk Talk: How to Manage Stress

In our busy lives, sometimes it seems silly to think that kids have stress. However, if you stop for a moment and remember back to when you were a child, the thought becomes less trivial. Students deal with just as much stress as adults, and in some cases, even more. In order for your student to feel more at ease, he or she might try one of the following: practice breathing. Regular, purposeful breathing can help the body calm down, often reducing the releasing of stress hormones. Also, find an activity you love, and do it. Engaging in a pleasurable activity can often reduce stress levels, especially if the activity is physical, like running or playing a sport. Also, reduce the activities that are causing the stress. Focus on the important things in life, and “don’t sweat the small stuff.”
