Chalk Talk: How to Manage Stress

In our busy lives, sometimes it seems silly to think that kids have stress. However, if you stop for a moment and remember back to when you were a child, the thought becomes less trivial. Students deal with just as much stress as adults, and in some cases, even more. In order for your student to feel more at ease, he or she might try one of the following: practice breathing. Regular, purposeful breathing can help the body calm down, often reducing the releasing of stress hormones. Also, find an activity you love, and do it. Engaging in a pleasurable activity can often reduce stress levels, especially if the activity is physical, like running or playing a sport. Also, reduce the activities that are causing the stress. Focus on the important things in life, and “don’t sweat the small stuff.”
