Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Berlin District Curriculum

In high school students take on advanced topics like chemistry, biology, and physics. Learners explore energy, matter, and waves, and also engage in learning about forces and motion. The manner in which these systems interact with one another is also explored. There is also an overview of how some aspects of scientific discovery are fluid and ever changing. Likewise, students explore essential scientific themes, such as motion and energy. Learners analyze matter, study linear motion, and devise an understanding of different types of energy, including kinetic and nuclear energies.

In Language Arts, learners ask questions of other participants to keep the discussion moving, and learn to recognize and support points of view that may differ from their own. Listening skills are also acquired as part of these exercises. Students engage in active listening strategies to show engagement in the discussion and support for the primary speaker. These skills include appropriate eye contact, open posture, and nonverbal communication such as head nods to confirm understanding of the speaker.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Environmental Education

Students that participate in outdoor or environmental education programs derive many benefits from such studies. Environmental education programs get kids up and out of the classroom and actively engaged in a hands-on exploration of the world around them. This allows for students to connect the concepts they learn about in school to real-world occurrences. Such active engagement also facilitates a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. Learning that occurs in an active setting also promotes much better retention of the material. Children in environmental education programs are also more responsible for their learning. Students develop essential knowledge and skills that they need in order to be strong students, as well as effective proponents of environmentalism.
