Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bethel Park District Curriculum

The mathematics program is designed to meet each student’s needs as they learn throughout all the grades. Grades 1-8 the students learn basic math computation, slowly working up through some geometry and algebra skills and accommodating different learning types through hands on exercises and real life examples. In high school, many math classes are provided including remedial classes for those who have fallen behind as well as advanced and AP classes for those who are ahead of their peers.

For the foreign languages requirement, students are provided with an overview of the four languages offered later (German, French, Spanish, and Latin) in fifth and sixth grade. In seventh grade, they get to choose a language and culture to study out of the four based on their introduction in fifth and sixth grades. In high school, students can continue with their language study and become conversationally fluent and able to read lengthy texts in another language. They will also have opportunities to participate in cultural exchange programs within and beyond the classroom.

Chalk Talk: Advantages of Studying a Foreign Language

Since English is the predominant language spoken all over the US, and commonly known all over the world, it can be easy to take for granted the value of studying a foreign language and culture. This is becoming, however, a bigger and bigger push and is now a requirement for schools in many states. Not only has it been shown that studying a foreign language can increase your options for travel and communication, it also helps in understanding basic subjects such as English and math. The skills used to decipher another language are skills you can use equally to decipher your own. What is more, learning about another language and culture can impact you in helping you to see other people in a new way and celebrating rather than fearing differences in world view and opinion. Most other educated countries require their students to learn at least 1 if not more languages sometimes from the time they are in 1st grade. Many times these are practical reasons, but the benefits are tremendous.
