Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Big Stone Gap District Curriculum

Students begin to learn about the History of the world around them by first looking at the general history of places such as China, or Greece. As they progress they begin to look at the governments and the people that have made up the areas around them, then they expand this to include the world around them. This leaves the students to see what it takes to allow them to live the lives they do.

Biology is one part of the Science curriculum in these schools. This is approached, in early elementary years, by allowing students to observe plants and animals in their natural setting. By the middle years, students begin to learn about the cells and systems which make up each of these living things. When these students graduate from high school, they will learn about DNA, and they will go into more details on the systems. Upon graduation, these students have an appreciation for what lays under the top layers of each thing they observe.

Chalk Talk: Sixth-Grade Mathematics

Children build on their mathematics skills each year. So if a child has been working to level, they will be able to handle sixth-grade mathematics easily. In this grade, some teachers begin to introduce negative numbers. They also are introduced to some of the basics of algebra and build on geometry skills. They may begin to find the area of three-dimensional shapes. This allows for a lot of hands-on experience to help make this topic clear. Finally, students learn about reasoning, such as how the student got the answer. These topics may sound overwhelming but by reinforcing the ideas at home, students should be able to take on sixth-grade mathematics with ease.
