Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Billerica District Curriculum
Billerica Public Schools have designed and implemented a Literacy Action Plan. The full plan can be accessed here. The key practices involve using systemic data to make decisions about instruction and maximize student learning, integrating a rigorous and standards-based curriculum that gets students ready for college, incorporating a tiered system of instruction that includes providing the necessary interventions, and involving families and the community in improving literacy.
The vision statement included in the action plan states that the district strives to develop learners who are skilled readers, writers, speakers, and problem solvers and who can excel in a global 21st century society. This requires that students be motivated to read, read and write more frequently in all their content areas, share what they have read with others, read complex texts with comprehension, retain their learning from grade level to grade level, etc. In order to achieve this, teachers must follow curriculum guides to ensure that students learn what they should be learning.

- Billerica Sixth Grader’s Essay About Inspiring Teacher Wins - When a sixth grade student heard about Barnes & Noble’s My Favorite Teacher contest, she immediately thought of her fourth grade teacher at Parker Elementary School, who instilled a love for reading and learning that she previously had not had in her. The judges unanimously selected her essay, which talked about her fourth grade teacher using a different voice for each character when reading to the class, as the winner. The student and her former teacher, who was humbled and honored by the words written about her, stayed in touch and even started a monthly book club.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Students Responsibility Through Class Jobs
Elementary school teachers can and often do one simple thing to help instill responsibility in their young students: create class jobs. Teachers should start out by choosing five to ten class jobs that serve a purpose and are doable for the students. They then have to they keep track of how students rotate through jobs, making sure that no one student goes too long without having a job and that each child holds each position before repeating jobs. The jobs are typically rotated on a weekly basis. Teachers should not incorporate more than ten jobs, as this could become overwhelming. Examples of class jobs may include a student who passes out papers (note: avoid having this student return tests with letter grades on them), leads the line, carries the lunchboxes down to and back from the cafeteria (usually two students), empties the pencil sharpener, or tallies the lunch count for the day (the number of students who pack lunch and those who will buy each choice in the cafeteria).
