Blacksburg District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in the Blacksburg area offer an open-curriculum along with team teaching. This allows students to receive the help they need more quickly and allows each student to succeed at their level. The curriculum is focused on core academic learning, the development of critical thinking skills, and on creating ways to connect core learning to areas of personal interest and other knowledge. At the high school level, the school system is in the process of implementing the Common Core State Curriculum. Because the curriculum model is in draft form at present for grades 9-12, teachers at the high school level are using the Core Learning Goals in the state curriculum as a guide.

We currently cover the following Blacksburg-area school district: Montgomery County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Blacksburg District Curriculum

Beginning in Kindergarten the students at Blacksburg schools are taught by themes. When the children learn about bears, they work in groups on reports and read books like Corduroy. This helps cover the Standards of Learning for Language Arts set forth by the Virginia Department of Education. This method continues through middle and high school when students begin learning about topics more in-depth. They begin researching, writing and editing papers on their own and become self-assured students when they graduate.

The Social Studies curriculum begins by studying famous Americans and finding what circumstances helped them become them become famous. As students enter third grade, they begin to study maps and explorers, then as they continue they study the history of Virginia, including what contributions Virginia made and what battles took place in this state. Before graduation, these students will expand their knowledge to cover world history and geography.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare for Back to School

When the school year comes to an end it seems like there is plenty of time to prepare for the coming year, however, this time sneaks up and before you know it, it time to go back. There are a few things to help prepare, so the next year will be a smooth one. First of all, schedule an appointment with a doctor to make sure everything is up-to-date. Next, if the child is going to start at a new building, plan to visit the school to help the child become familiar with the location of various rooms. Then create an area in the home for a calendar, phone messages and a bulletin board, so that everyone in the family can see what is happening. When there are back to school sales, stock up on the supplies that will be needed. Last of all; begin the new schedule in time for the child to become used to it before the school year begins. By heeding these suggestions the school year should start off on the right foot.
