Blackstone District and Curriculum

Blackstone-Millvale Regional School District, which was established in 1967, serves students in these two Massachusetts towns. In recent years, the district has built two new elementary schools as well as refurbished another. The district’s core values revolve around academic standards and expectations, leadership, teaching and professional development, learning environment, family and community, and collaboration and communication. The district lists expectations for what students are to learn and do in each grade level and content area by the end of the school year. Additionally, the district posts a curriculum blog and curriculum calendar.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Blackstone District Curriculum

Recognizing that best practices in instruction are developed by the teachers, Blackstone-Millvale Regional School District does something unique to honor educators who show excellence and innovation in curriculum design and instruction. Each year, teachers who comprise the Blackstone Valley Superintendent’s Collaborative are nominated to receive the Promising Practices in Education Award. These outstanding teachers also inspire their students to achieve highly and encourage fellow teachers to grow as professionals.

Each teacher who receives the award writes up a lesson plan that describes his or her best practices in teaching, which is published in an annual “Promising Practices Book”; this began in 2005. These lessons vary in subject matter but each engage the students either through hands-on learning projects or through a thoughtful integration of subjects. Additionally, as the district recognizes educators for creative, independent thought, so too do they offer students the opportunity to work on independent projects of their own design.

Chalk Talk: What Do Students Learn in Biology?

Biology is the study of life and living organisms. It is one of the three major sciences offered in high school. It is typically a required course for tenth graders; sometimes, advanced ninth graders may take biology. This gives students the chance to apply the scientific method on the study of the growth and development of organisms. Biology concepts include cells and their makeups, genetics, evolution, plants and animals (as well as their functions and processes. The types of cells are discussed as well. Students explore the role of enzymes as well as eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. They also study genetics and the ways in which genes mutate. Biology is also known for animal dissections, with the most commonly dissected animal being the frog. The process of dissecting allows students to see and understand organs in the body. High schools usually offer honors and A.P. courses in biology.
