Chalk Talk: Common Core - How Were the Standards Developed?

The Common Core Standards have quickly become the national standards as over 43 states have adopted them as their English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics curriculum. Striving to produce college, career, and life ready students, Common Core uses a rigorous and relevant approach to increase educational achievement in U.S. schools. The Common Core Standards were developed starting in 2009. State leaders including governors and state commissioners of education started the state-led effort. According to the Core website, teachers and standards experts from across the United States played a vital role in their development. Groups should as the National Governors Association and the Council Chief State School Officers received large amounts of feedback during the public comment periods, and thus the Common Core Standards were born.
